ALLOW THE SERPENT TO FEVER HER WATERS (ALTERATION II)
Allow the Serpent to Fever Her Waters (alteration II) is a continuation of the interactive installation There Is This Bush Growing Under a Streetlamp, in an attempt for the artist to re-locate herself into the project. From a desire to reassess her own perception of self, she undergoes the same experience as her participants; however, this time performing nine different tasks whilst wearing the EEG headset. Each visualised cloud corresponds to nine activities: running, taking a nap, being in a deep conversation, being in a meeting, drawing a sketch, reading about the apocalypse, masturbating, writing a love letter and being moved by music. Rather than creating an interactive environment as before, she now records her brainwaves, so as to somehow fixate the moment, rather than making it fleeting. The video piece is an investigation into the limitations of the photographic portrait, as well as a curiosity to experience what her viewers experience, seeing herself, as she asks them to see themselves. There Is This Bush Growing Under a Streetlamp started from a question of how we perceive the self, and a desire to materialise a possible essence, something to be shown to the viewer, hopefully to make them rethink how they see and experience themselves. Allow the Serpent to Fever Her Waters (alteration II) circles back to the beginning, as the artist desires to understand her own ‘self’ and reassess it once more in this second alteration.
